Upcoming Workshops

Camping and Photographing Bears in Alaska, July 2018

This is definitely only for campers! It is more of a rugged workshop with the emphasis on being in nature and getting up close with Grizzly bears! We have scored permits to camp at the gorgeous Brooks Falls Campground in Katmai National Park during peak bear-viewing season. There are only 4 participants slots available which will give us a 2 to 1 teacher-student ratio with Darren and me as teachers in the field. You have to be comfortable camping as well as preparing your own meals at the campground (or you can eat your meals at the lodge, but those are pricey).

–5-day itinerary–

July 16th:  Arrive in Anchorage and meet at our Anchorage B&B for an opening night lecture and orientation. After everyone has arrived, we will hit the town of Anchorage for dinner. Overnight at the B&B. Dinner provided

July 17th:  Breakfast together at our B&B then head to the airport for our small flight to Brooks Camp. Upon arrival at Brooks camp, we will set up and get ready for our first day with the Grizzly bears. Breakfast provided. All other meals not provided.

July 18th and 19th: Full days of bear shooting, one-on-one tutorials, and hanging by the fire in the lodge. Meals not provided.

July 20th: Pack up camp and head back to the water to catch our prop planes back to Anchorage.  Meals not provided. End of tour.

Notes:  If you do not want to prepare your meal at the campsite, there is a lodge that you can buy buffet style meals. To get to Brooks Falls you have to take a small float plane in which there are strict weight limits for luggage. With weather and other unknown circumstances, these flights are sometimes delayed and/or canceled. Therefore, you will need to have your own travel insurance. The bears are all around the area especially during this time of year. There are viewing platforms that are a great spot to see to see the bears feeding on the salmon in the falls. During busy times, you may have to wait for a spot. Also, no tripods are allowed on the platforms.

Cost: $3195
Included in costs: 2 to 1 teacher student ration for 4 days of photographing bears at Katmai National Park, Camping Fees, anchorage accomidation, opening night dinner, closing night dinner, transfers to and from the airport

Not Included: Flights to Anchorage, flights from Anchorage to Brooks Camp ($850 per person), any other meals not listed, camping gear, insurance, alcohol.

–about the parks–

Tsavo East: The park is famous for the ‘Man-eaters’, a pair of maneless man-eating male lions that unusually hunted humans rather than livestock. In 1898, as many as 135 railway workers were attacked and killed by the duo.  A variety of animals can be seen in the park such as lions, leopard, cheetah, zebras, giraffes, serval, antelopes, kongoni, lesser kudu, oryx, klipspringer, impala, striped hyena, ostriches, gazelles, buffalos, elephants and many more. A variety of migratory and native birds are seen.

Tsavo West: The Park is a vast expansion of African savanna and volcanic landscape with a more diverse array of habitats which include open plains, semi-desert scrub, woodland, the Chyulu Hills and rock outcrops. It’s famous for the Red Elephants, Oryx, and Gerenuk among other mammal’s species and bird life. The extensive diverse habitats offer an ideal area to search for a pride of Lions, Buffaloes, Cheetahs, Giraffe, Zebras, Hippos and Wildebeests. Tsavo West is also home to Mzima Spring. The Springs are fed daily by 250 million liters of water gushing from the Chyulu Hills and provide an oasis of green, an underwater hippo viewing chamber, two nature trails and some unique picnic spots. There is also a wealth and diversity of birds’ species.

Maasai Mara: Known as Africa’s Greatest Wildlife Reserve it is famous for an abundance of lion making it without a doubt one of Africa’s most famous safari destinations. The Masai Mara stretches 1‚510 sq km and offers the best game and bird-viewing not only in Kenya‚ but anywhere in Africa. The views across the rolling golden grasslands studded with acacia trees‚ rivers and forests are dazzling. The sense of space overwhelming.
