Three years ago today, I got married on an island in Zambia to my best friend. There were not too many guests, instead we had hippos, elephants, and monkeys at our wedding. When I came back from Africa I was still in the middle of wedding season, and I didn’t realize until recently I never actually blogged about our wedding. So here it is!
It was a hard decision to get married overseas. I think one of the reason I became a photographer is that I just love watching others have moments. Moments of pure joy, accomplishment, and happiness. I always feel privileged to be there. But the idea of having my own moment in the middle of lots of people really worried me. I wanted to just go somewhere amazing with Paul and have our moment just the two of us. No one watching, no one needing to be fed, no flowers, no bridal party, no family conflict, just us. Plus with shooting almost 200 weddings, I wanted to do something different. We did have a few people come, my parents, my photography teacher, a friend, then two awesome girls we had met on safari the week before. The biggest issue was trying to keep the monkeys off my wedding dress.
I loved my wedding day questionare, it had three questions, How much cake do you want? Any food restrictions? What color flowers do you want? It was kind of funny, I said blue for my flowers, and when I arrived, they told me that they tried for weeks to make blue roses for me, but couldn’t figure it out, so they asked if another color was ok. I was so flattered that the locals tried to change the color of flowers for me! I laughed and told them that the color didn’t matter at all.
We got married at Tongabezi Lodge. The Lodge was beyond amazing. The rooms were open with the sounds of hippos, and monkeys occasionally visiting. Our room was called the dog house, click to take a look at their websites amazing 360 degree view. Then we moved to the bird house. The rooms at Tongabezi were just beyond words. Waking up, literally on the Zambezi, was a beautiful experience. We look forward to heading back one day. We started the day going to the courthouse and signing all the papers and such. Then we moved to an island in the middle of the Zambezi.
Before our wedding we traveled a bit through Namibia, Botswana, and Zambia. Right after we were married we went to South Luangwa national park in Zambia, where we honeymooned in the park. We did walking safaris and camped in the park. Below are some of the pictures from the whole trip.
A big thank you to everyone who came over to be with us on our wedding day! An even bigger thank you to my wonderful husband, who really makes my life complete! Happy anniversary!
